Kampung Air Patau-Patau 2 is one of the last remaining water villages in Malaysia. The village consists of colourful houses built on wooden stilts linked together by wooden boardwalks.

Visitors participating in the Kampung Air Patau-Patau 2 homestay in Labuan get to enjoy a taste of local culture, cuisine and traditions in a unique marine environment.

The water village is located just 3 km west of Bandar Labuan (formerly Victoria) town centre, and is accessible on foot, by road or water taxi.

Established in the 1930s, the entire village was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt by the villagers after the end of the war.

The architecture and concept of the water village is heavily influenced by Brunei-Malay culture. During the reconstruction, only the highest grade ‘belian’ hardwood was used for the foundation, making the houses remarkably stable.

To this day, the village residents incorporate their Kedayan Bruneian culture and customs into their daily lives alongside later additions of modernity. They continue their traditional lifestyle of living in stilt houses over the sea, speak a distinctive Brunei-Malay dialect and observe the elaborate Brunei adat-adat (tradition) in their daily lives.

The villagers are descendants of traders, sailors and fisherfolk from neighbouring Brunei who settled here many generations ago. The settlement is made up of brightly coloured houses on stilts built over the sea, each connected by a series of boardwalks. Most homes have airy, cooling verandahs that are decorated with potted plants and flowers.

Being surrounded by water, the main mode of transportation is by boat and most of the houses here own one.

Kampung Air Patau-Patau 2 comes equipped with water and power supply, telephone and sewage lines, streetlights, water taxi jetty, grocery and handicraft shops, clinics, schools and other amenities you can expect from an organized village.

Homestay guests can explore the village, observe the locals flying their kites, join in the village games, go fishing right in their backyards for delicious catfish, or just bask in the sun.

The friendly host families will be all too glad to serve you some of the local delicacies including ambuyat, a traditional Bruneian sago dish (palm starch) usually served with a sour and spicy dip made of young mangoes, dried shrimps and chillies, and eaten with steamed fresh crabs, paha-paha (green vegetables) and other delicious local fares. Kausar, an aromatic fruit punch is served to accentuate the flavour of the meal.

Traditional games and dance performances can be arranged upon request.
